Vintage Fur

I’ve spent most of my life saying “I don’t wear fur.” I’m an animal lover (especially cute fuzzy animals) so the thought of killing a sweet little creature just to wear its pelt freaks me out. It was also never in the realm of possibility. Fur is expensive! I don’t have thousands of dollars tossing about in my wallet to blow on furry accessories. So, I’ve never worn it.

That is until I found the new love of my life (sorry Ross). I was perusing my favorite vintage shop Find a week or so ago and came across the most perfectly lovely coat I’ve ever seen. It was black, and fuzzy, and had a golden brown collar, and was clearly from the 50′s or 60′s. Ah it was a dream. And… it was fur.

“But I don’t wear fur,” I thought. “Perhaps vintage fur is ok.” After wrestling around with my thoughts for a bit, and trying it on to find that it fit perfectly, I decided to take the plunge. Fur / faux fur is so hot this year, I’ve really been coveting the looks I’ve been seeing. Plus, the fact that it was $26 and I had a $17 store credit didn’t hurt either. A beautiful coat for less than $10? Ok, twist my arm.

I still don’t believe in wearing new fur. This may be twisted thinking, but I figure if the animal has been dead for 50 years, it’s ok for me to wear. I’m not supporting a modern day fur factory. I am, however, supporting a local merchant.

It also happens to be so freaking warm! I was actually hot walking around town on Saturday. It is 3/4 sleeve (probably full sleeved on its first owner – I’ve got chimpanzee arms) so it requires a sweater or long gloves underneath, but man this thing is toasty.

Fur coat: Vintage from Find. I have no idea what kind of fur it is (though I’m kind of curious)
Jeans: American Eagle
Flannel: Vintage
Boots: L.L.Bean
Red purse: Marshall’s
Sunnies: Target

What are your thoughts on wearing fur? Do you wear it? Would you wear it if you were in my shoes? Are you jealous – this thing is AMAZING!

About sweetersalt

Salt = sodium = bad. Sweet = calories = bad. Well, isn't that just a bleak outlook. I firmly believe that without salt and without sweet we all just live in a world of lettuce. Plain lettuce. Fun? No. This blog is about life. Namely, my life. But, not that specific. I myself am simply not that interesting. I live an ordinary life, work an ordinary job and do ordinary things. But... life is all about experiencing that feeling you get when you really, really like something. If you don't feel a little warm in your heart when you walk into a farmer's market or try on a piece of beautiful clothing that fits you perfectly (that just so happens to be a great deal!) then you should probably keep on a' movin' from my little plot of internet. Sweeter salt is my metaphor for the good things in life, sprinkled over everything in moderation. Banana? Kinda boring. Banana smoothie - yum! White tank top? Yawn. Statement necklace layered over said tank - now we're talking! I live in Portland, Maine. I love cooking, eating out, riding my bike and approachable fashion. This blog does not chronicle my every waking moment. This is because you will probably not be entertained by the 10th day in a row that I eat the exact same salad for lunch. It does chronicle a healthy, active, fun-filled, colorful lifestyle, in Portland and beyond. It also covers dogs. Cute ones mostly.

These are essentially my thoughts on fur as well. I’m not really comfortable with the idea of buying something new, but vintage I think is ok. And you’re right – soooooo warm. Really makes a difference!

  3. Hey!!!
Came across your blog via Jemina’s blog..
You have put together a great look… and as far as wearing fur and your logic behind wearing it .. well.. A girl got to do what she got to do :) :)

I feel the same way about fur. Leather most of the time as well. But that coat is beautiful. Most of the time I feel fur coats look tacky. But that one is awesome! That light collar makes it.

  5. Actually, I have pretty much the exact same philosophy as you re: fur.

I will totally, any day of the week, buy fur at a thrift/vintage store. The furrier who actually did make and sell this coat no longer exists, and even if they do- they will not see one red cent of what I paid for it. And, I am promoting a local (and chances are charitable/not for profit) business. And in my case especially (my favorite thrift is an ARC), people with developmental disabilities.

So yeah, the lamb that died for the sake of my coat is all but irrelevant in terms of the fur I am wearing. And who knows, times were a lot different so perhaps the lamb was actually consumed for sustenance to boot. Everybody wins.

And it looks absolutely amazing on you. Big time.
