Beach Roses

My family loves going to York Beach, ME in the summer. I grew up going there for vacations and weekends and still love hitting up Long Sands for the beach and Short Sands for the salt water taffy. I haven’t made a trip yet this summer, but hope to soon. In any case, I always associate beach roses with York. I’m not sure why, they exist all over the coast, but when I see the bright pink blooms and smell their heady aroma I’m taken right back.

The coast along the Eastern Promenade walking trail in Portland is covered with beach roses in bloom and it makes me so happy. So, I dressed to match. Obviously. Who doesn’t wear floral shorts to coordinate with the flora and fauna?

Floral shorts: Forever 21
White t-shirt (that you can barely see against my pasty, washed out skin): Target
Black flats: Steve Madden
Sunglasses: 80′s Purple
Watch: Michael Kors
Green bracelet: vintage
Puggle: Precious Pugs Rescue and Adoption

These photos were taken on Saturday, which was such a lovely day. We traipsed around the prom, hung out on the rocks and soaked up some sun (with lots of spf, of course). Franklin seemed to enjoy the day too.

We had a Living Social coupon to use up for The Salt Exchange before it expired at the end of the month so we enjoyed a luxurious lunch in their outdoor seating area.  The lobster roll was incredible. They spread a thin layer of mayo on the bottom of the roll instead of mixing it in – genius! Since the coupon was for $50 we even got to enjoy drinks with lunch, yay for mid-day wine!

The things on top are pickled celery, which I picked off and ate separately. I’m a total lobster snob / purist, so I don’t like anything mucking up my favorite crustacean.

Are there any smells that remind you of summer or your favorite vacation spot?

About sweetersalt

Salt = sodium = bad. Sweet = calories = bad. Well, isn't that just a bleak outlook. I firmly believe that without salt and without sweet we all just live in a world of lettuce. Plain lettuce. Fun? No. This blog is about life. Namely, my life. But, not that specific. I myself am simply not that interesting. I live an ordinary life, work an ordinary job and do ordinary things. But... life is all about experiencing that feeling you get when you really, really like something. If you don't feel a little warm in your heart when you walk into a farmer's market or try on a piece of beautiful clothing that fits you perfectly (that just so happens to be a great deal!) then you should probably keep on a' movin' from my little plot of internet. Sweeter salt is my metaphor for the good things in life, sprinkled over everything in moderation. Banana? Kinda boring. Banana smoothie - yum! White tank top? Yawn. Statement necklace layered over said tank - now we're talking! I live in Portland, Maine. I love cooking, eating out, riding my bike and approachable fashion. This blog does not chronicle my every waking moment. This is because you will probably not be entertained by the 10th day in a row that I eat the exact same salad for lunch. It does chronicle a healthy, active, fun-filled, colorful lifestyle, in Portland and beyond. It also covers dogs. Cute ones mostly.

  1. I love the beach roses! It’s been awhile, but I used to take the rose hips from beach roses and make rose hip jam or dry them for tea – lots of vitamin C!

Are the beach roses hibiscus flowers? They’re beautiful!

    • sweetersalt says:

They’re actually just a member of the rose family, but they do look like hibiscus! Almost tropical looking, which is funny since they’re in the very non-tropical Maine.
