Strawberries and Champagne (minus the champagne)

Though there was no champagne for me this weekend (THE HORROR!) there was plenty of strawberries. Beaucoup, beaucoup de strawberries (or fraises if we’re speaking in French). Since it’s the tail end of the strawberry season in New England, Ross and I hit Maxwell’s Farm in Cape Elizabeth for some picking (we did the exact same thing last year too). As usual, we went a little overboard, but not a single strawberry will go to waste.

On Sunday I turned our kitchen into an amateur strawberry processing plant. I made my Strawberry Jam with Honey recipe (SO GOOD) as well as some strawberry frozen yogurt (from The Perfect Scoop by David Lebovitz). I froze the rest of the berries by cleaning and hulling them, then laying them on a baking sheet (cut side down). The sheet then went into the freezer for a couple hours to solidify then into a plastic bag they went. By freezing them individually you avoid having them freeze in one big clump. Now we’re in strawberry heaven!

This is where I got red strawberry goo all over my white t-shirt. I always know how to pick the most appropriate clothing for the occasion (lie). Perhaps a black t-shirt would have been a better idea for hanging out in a field? Does anyone else out there feel like they attract stains? I’m basically a magnet for dirt, debris and food matter (just like a 3 year old).

I hope everyone had a great weekend! It was so, so beautiful here, I even went swimming in the ocean! That rarely happens these days, but the water was pretty warm (by Maine standards). Get out there and enjoy some sun when you can (with spf of course).

About sweetersalt

Salt = sodium = bad. Sweet = calories = bad. Well, isn't that just a bleak outlook. I firmly believe that without salt and without sweet we all just live in a world of lettuce. Plain lettuce. Fun? No. This blog is about life. Namely, my life. But, not that specific. I myself am simply not that interesting. I live an ordinary life, work an ordinary job and do ordinary things. But... life is all about experiencing that feeling you get when you really, really like something. If you don't feel a little warm in your heart when you walk into a farmer's market or try on a piece of beautiful clothing that fits you perfectly (that just so happens to be a great deal!) then you should probably keep on a' movin' from my little plot of internet. Sweeter salt is my metaphor for the good things in life, sprinkled over everything in moderation. Banana? Kinda boring. Banana smoothie - yum! White tank top? Yawn. Statement necklace layered over said tank - now we're talking! I live in Portland, Maine. I love cooking, eating out, riding my bike and approachable fashion. This blog does not chronicle my every waking moment. This is because you will probably not be entertained by the 10th day in a row that I eat the exact same salad for lunch. It does chronicle a healthy, active, fun-filled, colorful lifestyle, in Portland and beyond. It also covers dogs. Cute ones mostly.

  1. I want to go strawberry picking! It’s been YEARS since I’ve been. It’s amazing how much different (better) fresh-picked strawberries taste than store-bought. I also think that picture of you holding the flat of strawberries is great… looks like a magazine shot!
