I bought this purple blouse last spring on an expedition to Savers in Portsmouth, NH. I picked it up know it wasn’t quite my style: very 80′s. It had a turtleneck (buttoned up in the back) and huge shoulder pads. However, there was something that drew me to it. Cut to one year later, and I still hadn’t worn it. Suddenly, I thought to myself whilst playing dress up in my room (does anyone else do that? experiment with clothes for an hour at a time?), Wear it backwards and unbuttoned! Cut out the shoulder pads!
This is how that realization made me feel.

Purple blouse: vintage
Black pants: Gap
Gray tank: J.Crew
Black heels: 9 West (bought these as my “sensible pumps” when I was 22 and got my first real job, still wear them occasionally!)
Gold tone necklace: vintage
Watch: Michael Kors
Have you ever worn a piece of clothing backwards? You should, it’s fun. Plus, I got loads of compliments on it.
Funny story, as I was pulling the shirt from my clothing rack I noticed that the name brand is “Nicola.” I looked at the purple shirt next to it, and realized it was the exact same brand and color, but purchased at separate thrift stores on different days. Here is that other purple shirt. Totally random, but I guess Nicola was pumping out a lot of royal purple blouses in the 80′s.

About sweetersalt
Salt = sodium = bad.
Sweet = calories = bad.
Well, isn't that just a bleak outlook. I firmly believe that without salt and without sweet we all just live in a world of lettuce. Plain lettuce. Fun? No.
This blog is about life. Namely, my life. But, not that specific. I myself am simply not that interesting. I live an ordinary life, work an ordinary job and do ordinary things.
But... life is all about experiencing that feeling you get when you really, really like something. If you don't feel a little warm in your heart when you walk into a farmer's market or try on a piece of beautiful clothing that fits you perfectly (that just so happens to be a great deal!) then you should probably keep on a' movin' from my little plot of internet.
Sweeter salt is my metaphor for the good things in life, sprinkled over everything in moderation. Banana? Kinda boring. Banana smoothie - yum! White tank top? Yawn. Statement necklace layered over said tank - now we're talking!
I live in Portland, Maine. I love cooking, eating out, riding my bike and approachable fashion. This blog does not chronicle my every waking moment. This is because you will probably not be entertained by the 10th day in a row that I eat the exact same salad for lunch. It does chronicle a healthy, active, fun-filled, colorful lifestyle, in Portland and beyond.
It also covers dogs. Cute ones mostly.
much better, love it! and doesn’t that end of july photo in the link look so appealing right now!
ugh, i was thinking the same. i want to go to there.
i’ve never worn a blouse backwards…maybe i’ll try it! i love this purple on you!
hilarious. and yes i wear my cardigan backwards more often than is normal.
I hope these two blouses hanging next to each other means that I am not the only person who rainbow color codes my closet.
In other backwards blouse news, I read a cute post about buying button downs and re-purposing them (on ‘because I’m addicted’ I think?) where you remove the sleeves of an old silk button down by ripping out the stitches and hemming, then cut the desired neckline and hem (removing collar and making scoop), then VOILA! you have a cute silk shell with buttons down the back to wear to work with your business tops.
oh yes, color coded all the way!
that’s a cute idea! i want a sewing machine so bad.
